Hair Graft Calculator

Hair Graft Calculator helps determine the approximate number of grafts needed for a hair transplant depending on the patient’s Norwood Class pattern of hair loss. The chart below shows the different grades in the Norwood Classification of Male Pattern Alopecia. The hair graft estimator assists in giving a broad estimate of how many grafts (follicular units) are required for a hair transplant process.

  • The entire scalp that needs to be covered should be transplanted during the initial hair transplant session. This was feasible up until Norwood Grade 5 Hair Loss. It is not advisable to cover only a portion of the scalp or execute the hair transplant in smaller sessions. In the future, a second session might be needed to cover future hair loss or add more density, but multiple sessions shouldn't be used to cover everything that can be done in a single hair transplant session.

The Surgical Hair restoration should be completed in a single or consecutive two-day session. By harvesting from the Scalp & Beard donor area. Additional sessions for Advanced Grades of Hair Loss ( Norwood Grade 6 &7) can be attempted after 6 months or a year.

A few critical points determine the success and longevity of the first hair transplant session. These include:

  • Creating or reinforcing, the frontal hairline & forelock to establish a permanent forehead frame to one’s face.
  • Covering the parts of the scalp that are bald or thinning, with the hair transplant attaining the vertex transition point.
  • In order for the results to appear natural and for the process to last for a long time on its own, adequate density should be added during the initial hair transplant session.

High-Density Hair Transplant is considered when:

High-Density Hair Transplant

  • Donor area density is above average.
  • Hair loss pattern has matured
  • Limited Hair loss in future anticipated
  • Frontal Hair loss only

A crown (or partial crown) transplant should be attempted during the initial hair transplant session if the patient has a dense donor area and is expected to lose little hair in the future. If crown restoration is attempted prematurely, then it increases the chance of further hair Transplant sessions in the near future. In Crown Hair transplant the coverage extends to the thinning areas in the periphery, beyond the central area of hair loss.

Second Hair Transplant Session

It usually takes 10 to 12 months to get the full outcomes of a Follicular Unit hair transplant. If a second hair transplant session is wanted, it should be scheduled after the hair from the first has grown in. Over the first year, the gradual rise in hair density, diameter, and length can significantly alter the appearance of the hair restoration. Only once the hair has reached style length can the individual and surgeon make an informed decision about the implantation of more hair grafts.

Goals for the second hair transplant include:

  • Cover the additional area of Hair loss
  • Coverage of crown scalp
  • Increase density In the previously transplanted areas

The hair transplant graft calculator helps in detrmining the number of grafts an individual needs. However, the total number of grafts required for complete surgical hair restoration varies by person. Patients vary greatly in terms of hair density, texture, head size and shape, facial traits, and age. As a result, the table above only gives an approximate total number of hair grafts required for each Norwood grade. The number of grafts you require will only be determined by a skilled hair surgeon after a thorough scalp evaluation. To learn more about it, or those wondering how to calculate hair grafts, can get expert help from Dr. Sumit Agrawal, a skilled hair surgeon. The doctor is known for his expertise and artistic vision.
